I returned from a trip to Utah on Wednesday. Tony picked me up at the airport and we went to the famous Melrose Diner in South Philly for dinner. Tony had not been there for years, and I had never been there. The Melrose was recently sold by the family that started it and Tony wanted us to go before it changed much from the old days. It was started in 1935 and has been a Philadelphia tradition ever since. The famous jingle for the Melrose went "Everybody who knows, goes to Melrose!" Tony sang it to me. Nice job honey!
Tony had breaded veal and I had Hungarian goulash. Both were pretty tasty, but they didn't do our bellies very well the next day! For dessert we had Hot Apple Pie with vanilla sauce and butter cream cake. The pie was fabulous! The cake was just so-so. It was a fun experience, but probably once was enough. Tony marveled at how clean the place is, and we did in fact see them clean a few times while we were there. The booth we sat at was split half way around, so two groups can sit there, and they do. As we were finishing our meal, another couple came and sat at our table across from us. Here is a picture from their website. You can see the separator half-way around the booth.
